Dubbo's Best Attractions for Curious Minds

Dubbo is the perfect balance of city and rural living and is a great place to stay for the holidays. Located in central western NSW, there are 3 major highways intersecting, making Dubbo a great hub for tourism. Here is a curated list of the best things to do in Dubbo for curious minds:

1. The Book Connection

We may be a bit biased with this one. Located on the historical site of the Exchange Hotel, The Book Connection is a large new and used bookstore that has been in the same location at 178 Macquarie Street since 1993. The Book Connection is known for its enormous collection of diverse topics and undiscovered gems at all price points. Spend an hour browsing and pop into the local cafe's with your latest read for a relaxing and indulgent outing.

2. Old Dubbo Gaol

Further down the main street is The Dubbo Gaol. Backing on to the gorgeous courthouse, the Old Dubbo Gaol operated from approx 1847 to 1966. Fans of architecture will love the brick and sandstone constructions, especially the imposing entrances. There are frequent tours running daily and many informative signs around on daily life at the gaol, famous inmates and creative escapes.

3. Western Plains Cultural Centre

The Western Plains Cultural centre has a constantly changing range of exhibits and a tasty cafe to relax in. This site is part of the original Dubbo Highschool. One portion is dedicated to the history of Dubbo, including a huge wall on the history of the main street. You can learn of architecture and businesses that occupied them from then to now. Other sections are dedicated to art and history and change frequently. The Cultural Centre is also known for hosting private events and groups in their conference rooms. Our personal favourite is the Outback Writers Centre and Dubbo Filmmakers groups with monthly gatherings.

4. Dubbo Taronga Western Plains Zoo

On the edge of town, you will find the Taronga Western Planes Zoo. Make sure to dedicate a whole day to this as there are kilometres of walking tracks and roads winding around the various large animal enclosures. Our beloved zoo is not-for-profit and has a strong focus on conservation. This zoo includes multiple cafe's, private function rooms, classrooms for visiting schools and various educational programs, and a wildlife hospital.

5. Royal Flying Doctor Visitors Centre

Located on the grounds of the airport is the Royal Flying Doctor Visitor's Centre. It sheds a light on the important job of these rural Australian heroes while also providing an interactive educational experience on the history of the organisation and rural flight. Our favourite parts of this experience are learning the true stories of the doctors, patients and aircraft. The on-site cafe showcases a replica of a De Havilland DH-83 Fox Moth and its stories of service and survival.

6. Total Tabletop.

Curious minds will love visiting, shopping, and playing at Total Tabletop. It has one of the largest collections of Warhammer merchandise this side of the blue mountains and events daily. The staff and customers are wonderful to play your favourite games with in the free space out the back. There are plenty of games available to try before you buy and always people willing to teach. Refresh yourself with their variety of snacks or bring in food from the local cafe's and restaurants to enjoy while you play. Our favourites are Friday night Magic: The Gathering and Saturday night open play.

Dubbo is where it is today because of local pride, passion and support. Show your love for our town/city by visiting these locations and support the local economy with your purchases.
